His holiness sent a brief message to his followers as he left the Vatican City and travelled by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo.
Pope Benedict XVI sent a brief message on Thursday morning to thank his 1.6 million followers on Twitter for their "love and support" as he left the Vatican City towards Castel Gandolfo, his new residence.
Benedict XVI, who was born 85 years ago in Germany as Joseph Ratzinger, became the first Pope to resign in 600 years. His Holiness issued one last statement on his Twitter account, which has already been retweeted over 26 thousand times.
"Thank you for your love and support. May you always experience the joy that comes from putting Christ at the centre of your lives", he said. The brief message was quickly translated into eight other languajes, one for each of the Pontiff's Twitter accounts.
